Gryffindor
Founder: Godric Gryffindor
Symbol: A Lion Rampant
Colors: Scarlet and Gold
Ghost: Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington ("Nearly Headless Nick")
Dwelling: Gryffindor Tower, 7th Floor: Entrance guarded by the Fat Lady
Traits: Bravery, Chivalry, Courage, Daring
Notable Gryffindors: Albust Dumbledore, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, James Potter, Lily Evans, Minerva McGonagall, Molly Prewett, Neville Longbottom, Peter Pettigrew, Rebeus Hagrid, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black and the Weasley family.
Gryffindors are known for their daring nerve, chivalry, and bravery which, more often than not, causes them to be a little reckless at times. Generally, they cling to their morals and fight for what they believe is right. Gryffindors are not the type to sit on the sidelines; its just not in their nature. They're not all sunshine and rainbows though...well, not if you ask someone outside of the house. "According to Phineas Nigellus Black, members of other houses, particularly Slytherin, sometimes feel that Gryffindors engage in "pointless heroics." Another Slytherin, Severus Snape, considered many Gryffindors to be self-righteous and arrogant, with no regard for rules" (HP Wiki). They can also have a bit of a temper but for the most part, they're good people.
Hufflepuff
Founder: Helga Hufflepuff
Symbol: A Badger Sable
Colors: Yellow and Black
Ghost: The Fat Friar
Dwelling: In the dungeouns near the Kitchens.
Traits: Loyalty, Dedication, Hard Work, Fair Play, Patience
Notable Hufflepuffs: Cedric Diggory, Ernie Macmillan, Hannah Abbott, Justin Finch-Fletchley, Nymphadora Tonks, Pomona Sprout and Susan Bones.
Hufflepuffs tend to get the short end of the stick which is unfortunate. People in this house are hardworking, loyal, and always try to do the right thing. They're patient people who make awesome friends. They tend to avoid confrontation, which we can see in their ability to stay out of the house rivalries as best they can. They're generally well-rounded people in most walks of life but this isn't always the case. Fun fact? Hufflepuff is the house that has produced the fewest number of Death Eaters. They're generally overlooked and underestimated by other houses. But let's not forget, they have their winners. Cedric Diggory? He was a Hufflepuff; just remember that.
Ravenclaw
Founder: Rowena Ravenclaw
Symbol: An Eagle
Colors: Blue and Bronze
Ghost: Helena Ravenclaw, The Grey Lady
Dwelling: Ravenclaw Tower, entrance on the Fifth Floor guarded by an eagle knocker which asks riddles to gain entry.
Traits: Intelligence, Wit, Wisdom, Creativity, Individuality
Notable Ravenclaws: Cho Chang, Filius Flitwick, Garrick Ollivander, Gilderoy Lockhart, Luna Lovegood, Moaning Myrtle and Quirinus Quirrell.
Obviously, as you probably know, these guys are really effin' smart. They're the most intelligent of the bunch and known for their intellect and wit. Generally speaking, these guys will be at the top of their classes because they just love to learn or maybe just really like to prove how much smarter they are than everyone else. This isn't always the case but it's a generalization made about the house. They are also said to be incredibly competiive, especially in academic pursuits. They have a different way of thinking than others but know how to use that logic and common sense when they really need to. This combined with their unique creativity allows them to be the problem-solvers of the bunch. They generally seem to keep more to their own house but once again, this isn't always how it goes down.
Slytherin
Founder: Salazar Slytherin
Symbol: A Serpent Argent
Colors: Green and Silver
Ghost: The Bloody Baron
Dwelling: Slytherin Dungeons underneath the Black Lake.
Traits: Cunning, Ambition, Self-Preservation, Resourcefulness, Traditionalism
Notable Slytherins: Andromeda Tonks, Bellatrix Lestrange, The Carrow Twins, Draco Malfoy, Lucius Malfoy, Narcissa Malfoy, Rabastan Lestrange, Regulus Black, Rodolphus Lestrange and Tom Riddle.
Not everyone in this house is mean and awful, that's just the stereotype. They are calculating, ambitious, and yes, somewhat manipulative. But all of those (except maybe the latter) can be positive attributes if not in excess. The students in this house will generally always look out for number one though they are capable of friendship. Not everyone completely hates muggleborns and thinks they're trash but most of them do (or are smart enough to pretend to). Depending on the time period, Slytheirn is almost exclusively composed of Purebloods, though there are some exceptions. If it is previous to the end of the second battle, Muggleborns are more than likely not going to make the cut. Why would they want to in the first place?
