He may have been unable to truly feel time passing by, but Kevin could watch events. His mental-clock was permanently frozen, but as he watched Hogwarts nearly burn to the ground & then be rebuilt from the rubble, he understood that it had been years. This thought terrified him - he'd only looked away for what had felt like a few moments, but suddenly there it was, beautifully restored - Hogwarts castle. He floated through the corridors and recognized no one.
Then, there she was.
Heavens, he'd missed her more than anything. More than he'd missed living, he'd missed her. Fresh and young and pretty, long black hair flowing down her back with wide eyes that lit up her entire face when she spoke. On her way to class, he'd guard her through the walls, and when she went out at night, he lit up her path with fireflies.
She didn't remember him? Or maybe she just wanted to return to ignoring him. He was alright with either. It felt good to know that he could protect her again. She would be there forever & he could just take care of her. The relief he'd felt to know she was okay, that she'd come back, it was enough to nearly jolt a pulse back into him.
"Cass! Wait up!"
No, no, no, no, no, no. Something wasn't right.
"What did you want?"
"What, I couldn't just be missing your company?" The boy that had approached her sped up his pace to keep up with her, giving her a charming grin & ruffling his hair. "But seriously, I wanted to talk to you. That assignment in History, I was thinking I could research your g-"
"Never going to happen." The girl sped up & continued to walk, so quickly now that Kevin almost hit a wall in surprise instead of gliding through it, concentrating too hard on her instead of where he was going. Now that he stared a little harder, he could see the differences. Her eyes were lighter, her features were too young.
"You don't understand, I just, I thought maybe I could tell it from a different point of view, you know? Cass, please. I just want to talk to you for a second."
That got her to slow down a little.
"Look, my grandmother was responsible for a lot of dead aunts & uncles in our class, alright? You're not making any friends by writing the neo-version of her story. Just drop it."
"Oh, stop acting like you're so much worse off. There are a lot of us with parents who were involved with that sort of thing. It's the past."
"There aren't a lot of you with Bellatrix Lestrange for a grandmother. Don't talk to me." she snapped, her voice barely more than a snarl now, before she turned & sped down the hallway, vanishing into the crowd. The boy stood there, dumbstruck & frustrated, before Kevin swooped in on him, startling him.
"Leave her be." he said sternly, his ghostly voice echoing as he spoke. Without another warning, he shot upward, vanishing through the ceiling.
