HOW TO: PORTRAY A CHARACTER WHO HAS A SECRET
Most characters have secrets. Some may not be as extreme as others, but it’s still a secret. Something the character doesn’t want people to know. Now, this is how I think characters with secrets should be played. This is not exactly how you need to play your character. I also wrote this in ten minutes so it’s not the best. My apologies.
Know the definition of secret. If you don’t, here’s some links. (x) (x) (x)
Make sure you understand why your character wants this to be a secret. There’s got to be a reason for your character wants to keep this private. Maybe it’s embarrassing for them, or traumatizing. Either way, know what the reason is.
Understand the secret. This is pretty self explainable. If you’re in an OC rpg and you chose your character’s secret and backstory, make sure it fits into the backstory and the backstory supports the secret. If you’re in a bio rpg and a secret is given to you, make sure you thoroughly get the backstory and understand the secret.
Don’t bring it up. If someone goes onto a topic that’s related to the character’s secret then try to change the subject. If there was a party over the weekened and you ended up sleeping with your best friend, the next Monday you probably wouldn’t want to talk about it.
If it is brought up and they can’t avoid it, make sure they react. Don’t have your character just be like, “oh okay, we’re talking about how I had sex with my teacher? Cool!” No, ‘cause that probably won’t happen. Your character might be noticeably upset or uncomfortable. Maybe they’re just straight up pissed. But that depends on the character’s personality. Make sure you got a reaction down if it does happen.
Try to be as realistic as possible.
